The permeation of cultural background serves as an essential instrument for second language acquisition. “The best methods of second language teaching are therefore those that supply ‘comprehensible input’ in low anxiety situations, containing messages that pupils really want to hear. These methods allow pupils to compare and recognize that differences come from supplying communicative and comprehensible input, and not from forcing and correcting production.” ( Krashen 1987).
Purposes of Introduction of Cultural Background Teaching “The best methods are therefore those that supply ‘comprehensible input’ in low anxiety situations, containing messages that pupils really want to hear. These methods do not force early production in the second language, but allow pupils to produce when they are ‘ready’, recognizing that improvement comes from supplying communicative and comprehensible input, and not from forcing and correcting production.” ( Krashen 1987)
According to Krashen’s input hypotheses, humans acquire language in only one way——by understanding messages or by receiving “comprehensible input”, thus by comparison between Chinese culture and western countries’ cultures, we can expect to strengthen pupils’ understanding towards English to a better level. Besides, Atkinson also approves an idea that: when learning English as a foreign language, the student can hardly make themselves as a blank sheet, but unconsciously tend to compare English with their mother tongue.
On the other hand, various characteristics of pupils would largely influence the quality of the introduction and the characteristics can be generalized as follows:
Pupils are curious; they lack clear goals of action; he special phisiological characteristics and pupils are imaginative and creative.
To sum up, cultural influence is a crucial key to achieve the purpose of English teaching. Besides, only if teachers can help pupils make a bridge that connects their own culture and the foreign one and always remind them of the final purpose of acquisition of English, will it be possible to employ foreign language as an effective tool to communicate with westerners better.
